Shadow of the Hegemon The Shadow Series Orson Scott Card 9780812565959 Books

I liked this book written by Orson Card. After the space war is over, Ender is sent to colonize another planet, while his crew of child-warriors is sent back to Earth to return to their families. With the alien threat over, the nations wish to assert their sovereignty. The children who were in Ender’s army are suddenly kidnapped and only Bean is able to slip away. Bean asks Ender’s brother, Peter, for help since he already has a huge behind-the-scenes influence on the politics of Earth. Together they must fight off Achilles and attempt to achieve worldwide peace.

The whole focus of the book is on world politics about 200 years in the future. I enjoyed learning about the culture, geography and history of several countries. The two main countries mentioned in the book are Thailand and India and it was interesting to learn more about their governments. I was also interested in how several areas of the world were divided into certain loyalties.

Shadow of the Hegemon The Shadow Series Orson Scott Card 9780812565959 Books Reviews

So here we are again... 2 weeks... 2 Shadow books... and I just bought the 3rd in the Series. This is really the series I wanted with Ender, but I guess it was Bean's story. There are so many reasons I like this book. 1. My vocabulary (which was large) is growing by leaps and bounds, without the writer just dropping in a big word on occasion so HE looks smart. 2. My knowledge of History is growing by leaps and bounds. Being American, my history of SE Asia is pretty limited, and this book really helped! 3. If you are a conspiracy theorist as I like to play at, this is a very real possibilty how much of the politics of the future could eventually play out! The historic strategy that CARD has studied, along with the military prowess combines into a second enthralling book I've devoured in as many weeks
I didn't think I would like moving away from the Ender storyline but I am really enjoying Bean. The portrayal of America in this book is totally plausible. The nation's that drive the world Bean lives in are plausible as well. The characters are fleshed out and you want to know more. Looking forward to the next. I can recommend. Gbash
I love the Ender series and adore the first book in this series Ender's Shadow. This book was good enough to read to the end, but not up to Orson Scott Card's usually wonderfully high standard of excellence. Many sequences seemed redundant and the whole book seemed more like an elaborate third draft, but not quite final release quality. What I love about much of Mr. Card's writing is that in the process of writing it, he discovers something very different that needs to be told than he originally knew and this often leads to major revisions. In the afterward of this book, he describes how one of his test readers helped him with one of these revision points. I am left with the strong feeling, however, that this book is mostly how Mr. Card originally conceived it, and it did not benefit from the types of major ephiphany in Mr. Card's writing process that has taken so many of this other books from good into sublime greatness.
I've read Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow and decided to keep reading the series for the ladder because honestly, those books are brilliant. Shadow of the Hegemon, however, at least for me, was not.

I felt like it was very inconsistent with what I've already read, and while you expect the kids that made up Ender's jeesh to change, you don't expect them to just...I don't even know. It's hard for me to believe that Petra is the only one of them to maintain a strong personality and not give into Achilles. And while Achilles was terrifying in an underhanded psychological way in Ender's Shadow, in SotHegemon, it's almost like his weapon is his charisma, which made him seem very weak in terms of villainy.

Bean's memories and the references to Ender's Shadow seemed super distorted to me, almost like Card had forgotten what he'd written and just guessed at it. At one point, Bean has this pivotal realization that the happiest time of his life was when he was with Sister Carlotta before leaving for space, and how he cared about her so much and etc. But...I'm pretty sure, if I remember correctly, Sister Carlotta gave him a hug and he accepted it, but not without thinking, 'I don't really understand why we're hugging but if she wants to, okay, but I'd really like to leave now.'

I don't know. I feel really bad because I desperately wanted to enjoy this book, and maybe even expected to since I could not put Ender's Game or Shadow down. Unfortunately, it just didn't take advantage of all of the potential it had. Peter, who could have been a wicked awesome character in this - and holy crap, could have gone head to head with Achilles politically which would have been BRILLIANT - became an odd side character that had very little purpose. And the sudden romance between Bean and Petra came out of nowhere and, again, was something that was half-heartedly alluded to from Ender's Shadow. It left me thinking, "Um...I thought that they really disliked each other since the whole Bonzo Madrid situation, but all right..." Even though they were able to sort things out, I never got the impression that they were suddenly BFF's.

Also, the beginning bugged me. It was such a beautiful and meaningful moment at the end of Ender's Shadow that he discovered he had family, and then...well, bye bye. Not a thought spared for them through the rest of the book.

Again, I feel horrible. This could have been phenomenal. I wish it had been.
Following the aftermath of the the Formic Wars, ‘Ender’s Jeesh’ are welcomed home as venerated heroes of earth, yet it is their fame and expertise that lures an insidious manifestation of evil Achilles (pronounced Ah-SHEEL). With a faulty, deified self-perception, Achilles emboldens nations to ethnocentric wars to fabricate the most auspicious circumstances for his hungry usurpation as ‘Ruler of the World.’ Inebriated with the desire for power, Achilles hijacks the most brilliant military minds (Ender’s Jeesh), but strikes one for death Julian Delphiki–better known as ‘Bean.’ However, Bean’s impeccable record of narrowly escaping death remains unmitigated. And as arrogant as he may be, for most obvious reasons, Bean self-mandates himself as the only force capable of stopping Achilles, saving the world from a manic ruler, and rescuing Petra–a friend he refuses to have killed.
