Plum the Pug, lives in Paris with his human mom, Juliet, a student at the renowned culinary school, Le Cordon Bleu. When a van carrying wine (after all, it is Paris) hits little Plum, his life and Juliet’s, changes dramatically. This funny, canine coming-of-age story features Plum, the talking dog, who not only becomes human in his thoughts, but is magically gifted with a palate to rival that of any highly esteemed French chef.
And this is where his adventure begins as Plum decides to become a Paris restaurant critic, food blogger and author. Aided by Juliet, and the handsome Jean-Claude, Juliet’s chef instructor at Le Cordon Bleu, Plum takes on the highly charged and cruelly vicious Paris food scene.
Plum quickly becomes an international sensation and global media star, after all he is a talking dog. But too much wine, food, TMZ and Access Hollywood-fueled fame help send his celebrity excesses and life spinning wildly out of control.
Falling in love was not supposed to happen either.
Finding himself at rock bottom, Plum hopes he’ll get a second chance at a normal life. He wonders if the uneasy truth behind his ability to speak will ever come out. And if getting a perfectly clean slate will, truly, give him exactly what he needs to be comfortable in his own, furry, skin.

Review here from Margaret, Paul's wife. As a YA reader, I wanted to jump in here and say how much I enjoyed this. It's a fun, romp of a read and a welcome relief from the dystopian fiction that seems to be crowding the YA book shelves these days. Plum, the Pug, the book's main character gets into an accident and awakens with the ability to talk. Who doesn't love a talking dog? With the ability to talk comes new experiences and that's where this book is good; it's like experiencing everything from the viewpoint of a child, once again, albeit a child with a phenomenal palate who likes to write about his food. I just wish the author had maybe explored some of these themes a bit more deeply, but truly an enjoyable read. And the Tumblr for the book is a lot of fun too. http://the-dog-that-ate-paris.tumblr.com/post/110734579344/me-sipping-melange-in-a-quiet-bistro-in-the-7th-inProduct details

The Pug That Ate Paris edition by DB Gilles Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I picked up this book casually and before I knew it I was hooked and couldn't put it down. OK, I'm an adult, but I love Young Adult books and this one took me into its world, made me laugh and made me wonder. Also, for anyone who is into food, restaurants or Paris, it has everything. You get so wrapped up in the life of the main character and when the mystery is dialed up a notch, you are propelled even more into caring about the story and the characters. Great book for young and old!
The last time I saw Paris…I was with a grumpy, human companion. If only Plum, the witty, charming, talking pug, was by my side. It doesn’t matter how he gains the power of speech (which makes perfect sense as you’re drawn into his tail…I mean tale), he has more smarts, attitude and food savvy than any of the humans you will encounter in the ‘City of Light.’ Even if your idea of haute cuisine is a stop at Burger King, and you’re not a fan of four-legged critters, you will love Plum and his sassy insights into French food and culture, puppy love – and the human heart.
This improbable, delightful story about a dog that thinks, writes and enjoys life as a “human” celebrity food critic is much more than tall tale fantasy. You can’t help but fall in love with Plum, as the Pug he is, and for his human feelings and expressions.
Hilarious, sophisticated and smart, the book pulls the reader through the highs and the lows of life as seen through the eyes of a gifted dog that expresses human awareness and emotions. I found myself admiring Plum’s desire to succeed, laughing out loud at his pomposity, empathizing with his profound disappointment and sorrow, and delighted with his climb back from desperation.
As a bonus, Plum, delivers an insider’s view of Parisian restaurants and cooking, as only a dog can. This book is much more than its title suggests. It moves so fast I had to read it in one sitting.
The Dog That Ate Paris is both a light-hearted talking dog novel as well as a metaphor for the reader to follow their passions, even if a blank slate is needed over and over again. Gilles, a well established playwright/author and professor at New York University, has created a story about a dog in Paris named Plum, who coincidently falls in love with Paris, its food, and its fashion. It seems cliche, yet Plum is a complex, funny, and human character who happens to have the body of a pug but the voice of Robert Downey Jr. The book will make any desire you have to visit Paris multiply and your stomach will be growling even if you just finished deux entrées at your favorite French restaurant. It's a fun adventure to travel the streets with Plum. It's a fast read, roughly eight to ten hours, and Gilles spends little time on the descriptive features of characters and settings, yet he allows your imagination to grow into the looks and attitudes of everyone- especially a pug in a cape sitting at the Hemingway Bar after five gin martinis.
D.B. Gilles has conjured a clever, comical, and delightful treat within his Parisian parable with his pug-faced pooch “Plum”, who can speak, and reaches his improbable life ambition as an outstanding connoisseur et critiquer of the gourmet fare at Paris’ famous restaurants. Plum’s discussions with the reigning critiquer who helps and teaches Plum the score, are hilarious and at the same time Plum’s passion will gain your empathy, You will laugh and cheer as Plum stumbles over the obstacles to being a mere “Dog” (especially with other dogs) and emerges as a notable professional food critic. In a word I will say “The Dog That Ate Paris” is brilliant from the start to the end. I give it five stars!.
"I don't do dog." Those four words at the end of the first paragraph of this book tell you all you need to know about our hero, Plumley--more affectionately known as Plum--a French food critic who just happens to be a talking pug.
This fun, fast-paced young adult novel offers more than what you might expect from the title and cover, which, quite honestly, should be enough for any true foodie, pug fan or Francophile. Inside, you'll also find comedy aspects of Theatre of the Absurd and social commentary on the impossibility of privacy in the social media age. And, you know, a dog that speaks and who is turned off by other dogs. Talk about an existential crisis. Loved it. Hooked me from the first page and read it in one shot.
I love this new book, The Dog That Ate Paris, by D.B. Gilles. The hero is a talking dog named Plum. He is a food critic in Paris. I can't reveal how he gets the power to talk like humans, (it's a mystery at the heart of this great story.) Plum has an accident that changes his natural dog instincts. He is transmogrified into a talking, writing foodie expert! Plum's human Mom is his best pal and helper. She also has a friend, a sympathetic french-cook, who teaches Plum the ropes of food writing. But Plum's success leads to troubles and danger...but I'll let you discover that for yourselves. I really loved reading The Dog That Ate Paris and didn't want to the book to end. When I finished, I was hungry for more. You will be too!
