Disclosure: blogger purchase. This review originally appears on my blog.Chloe Neill’s Chicagoland Vampire series is on my list of must reads. I can’t really remember how I came across this series; it’s possible I was on my way to Chicago and looking for related fiction. In any event, what I found was totally absorbing and I immediately fell in love with Merrit and Ethan and the entire Chicagoland Vampire world created by Chloe Neill. As an aside, the series offers amazing insights into the food and neighborhoods of Chicago. Chloe wisely allows her vampires the ability to eat and enjoy food.
This novella won’t take long to read but it will expand your series horizon. It’s the first story I have read in the series that doesn’t really have anything to do with the Cadogan House vampires. It’s all about Jeff Christopher and the woman he is in love with, Fallon. When Jeff first came into the series as a member of Merrit’s Grandfather’s staff he seemed a bit nerdy, but sweet. I still thought of him in nerd terms: physically clumsy, super smart, all those 1980s nerd stereotypes.
Well, let me tell you, Jeff is the nerds’ great leap forward (literally – he is a tiger shifter). He may be a brilliant computer nerd, super hacker dude, but he is also a shifter and a fighter. He’s been pretty impressive since his first shifter action in the series.
The theme in this story is all about love and duty. It’s the story of the princess who loves the commoner; one trope in my paranormal reading that is not overdone. It’s presented interestingly and I could very honestly envision this particular story as a graphic novel — especially the villain. We’ve met Fallon, but haven’t really gotten to know her, so this being from her point of view is really a fresh peek into her head. She’s pretty cool -- with “ink” and piercings.
The love story is quite low key, although I found the couple’s despair palpable, and I was mildly outraged by the pack rules that would allow a non-wolf shifter to be a pack member but not be an equal member --I was quite engaged in the story. There’s a fillip, that is a lot of fun and strengthens the young, current vibe these characters bring to the series.
As a great big plus a two chapter excerpt of the next novel, WILD THINGS, is included at the end of the novella. For the current $2.99 price tag you get a short story and the WILD THING chapters. If you haven’t read anything by Chloe before it’s a reasonable test drive. This is high quality writing and fiction, so though it is not ninety nine cents, it’s still a good value.
I have read into the excerpt from WILD THINGS and Chloe deftly provides enough back-story so you can understand the situation, but not enough to bog the story down. I wouldn’t say that would be my favorite way to introduce you to the series but it does help, and you might want to go back to the beginning to catch up on all of the bone-melting moments and spine-chilling twists Chloe has engineered throughout the earlier books in the series.
Chloe’s Chicagoland Vampire Series is a MUST READ for any lover of paranormal romance or urban fantasy. There’s quite a bit of both sub-genres to make it sit right on the line of demarcation.

Howling For You A Chicagoland Vampires Novella A Penguin Special from New American Library edition by Chloe Neill Paranormal Romance eBooks Reviews
This novella leaves the vampires behind and concentrates on the shifters. Fallon Keene is the next in line to be Apex of her pack if something happens to her older brother Gabriel before his infant son Connor grows up. What that means for Fallon is the she needs to find a mate. Fallon and her family are wolf shifters - the most prestigious of all shifters - and her family needs her to mate with another wolf shifter.
However, Fallon is in love with Jeff Carpenter who happens to be a tiger shifter. In order to do her duty to her family she is meeting and dating "potentials" but none of them are Jeff. The latest potential is Gabriel York who comes from a family that is quite wealthy but has never been high up in the pack hierarchy. She dates him but, as usual, there are no sparks.
Sparks do fly when she wakes up the next morning and finds that the coronet that is used to anoint the alpha family has gone missing. It was scheduled to be used at a ceremony that will mark baby Connor's entrance into the pack. Since the main suspect is Gabriel, Fallon and Jeff need to track him down to see if he was the thief. Jeff and Fallon make a great team but it takes some major effort for them to find a way to be together.
This was an enjoyable story as Fallon decides if love or her duty to her pack is the most important to her. I loved Jeff's care for her and for his geekiness.
The novella also includes the beginning of WILD THINGS that makes me very eager for the book to be released. WILD THINGS brings us back to the main storyline with Merit and Ethan and the troubles they are having both with the mayor of Chicago and the Greenwich Presidium (the vampire council).
I love Chloe Neill's Chicagoland Vampire series, so when I heard that Jeff had a novella coming out I was all for it! Howling for You is the story of Jeff and Fallon, but what surprised me most was that it was all in Fallon's point of view. I had just assumed it would be Jeff's since this was "Jeff's novella". But that didn't have any effect on how awesome this novella was.
Fallon is second in line to be the leader of the Pack. First in line is Connor and he's still young and won't be leader for awhile. He's to be initiated into the Pack so that he may one day be the leader. In the meantime, Fallon is being set up on a slew of blind dates in order to find herself a mate so if and when the time comes for her to lead the Pack, she'd have the proper wolf mate. And sadly, Jeff, the man she loves to be with is only a tiger shifter. And the rule dictates that she must be with a wolf.
Fallon's dating issues are only part of the issue, the big issue comes along when the crown--the symbol of the Pack is stolen. Since Jeff set up their security system, he and Fallon team up to track down the bad guy.
As fast as novellas go by nature, it's safe to say this was a quick read. And an enjoyable one as well. I love the relationship between Jeff and Fallon. Of course, Jeff is awesome anyway, so that's half the battle there anyway, but Fallon--whose character hasn't been seen too much lately in the series and my memory of her is sketchy at best--was an intriguing and fun heroine too. She's got skills and knows how to handle herself.
To wrap up this not so mini review, Howling for You was incredible! I love Jeff and I loved getting to re-know Fallon! I was very happy with the outcome as well, but all things considered, you can kind of guess where it's going and since it is a novella, that's a good thing!
