The Pearl Wars Skyship Academy Book 1 Nick James Books
This story is a science fiction dystopia. It features a corrupt earth government, Skyships of rebels, and aliens. In this future when the United States has been devastated by something and retaliated by nuking any perceived enemies, surface dwellers are divided into fringers and the residents of some protected cities. These cities are powered by pearls that fall from the sky and have enough energy to keep the cities going. The main characters are Jesse Fisher who has been raised on one of the skyships and is supposed to be training as one of the agents who are spies and soldiers. He's more interested in going to one of the other cities as soon as he turns eighteen. The other main character is Cassius Stevenson who has been raised on Earth under the control of the mysterious Madame who goal is to bring down the skyships.
The boys first meet on earth in one of the abandoned cities when both are looking for a fallen pearl. When they touch each other something strange happens to each of them. Jesse develops the ability to call the pearls to him and to cause them to explode. Cassius gains the ability to explode spewing fire all around him. Cassius has no control over this ability but Madame says that she has the cure if only he goes to skyship academy and brings her Jesse.
Jesse has plans of his own and wants to get to Seattle to find out about his mysterious past. This story is filled with action as both boys find themselves on Earth and making their way to Seattle. This is the first book in a series. I'll be reading more to find out more about Jesse and Cassius.

The Pearl Wars Skyship Academy Book 1 Nick James Books Reviews
Good story, but not great. Interesting concept, but the balance was ... off. It needed more dynamics to draw one in a little too much time spent describing stuff that didn't need to be elaborated about (or described at all), and not enough time spent developing things that would have deepened the story. Kind of a flatter version of "Ender's Game." The adult protagonist and antagonist distracted from the flow of the story, which is a pity, as the story has promise.
Good start to a new series. Mainly geared towards young adults (the main characters are in the 15-year-old range) in a post-apocalyptic future. There is little explanation about how we got here (was it WW3? Alien Invasion? Superbug?) but a few details come out towards the end of the book (when it begins to directly affect the plot).
I'm not sure yet how credible I find this future world, but a little suspension of disbelief is often required. An entertaining read and certainly worth the money & time invested.
Finally, a young adult science fiction novel that manages to combine action and characterization in a balanced way. Yes, it is another dystopian story, but James manages to make it fun and exciting. The morose and gory aspects that characterize most novels in this genre are swept away in favor of a cool concept and an intriguing plot. The cover mislead me to believe it had a Steampunk quality. I was quite happy to discover that it was good clean science fiction. There are aspects introduced near the end that give me hope for the sequel. Fear not, the story has a tidy ending that is satisfactory. I can't wait to read more!
Although I enjoyed The Pearl Wars, I have to admit it didn't pull me in as much as I had expected. One part dystopian, one part steampunk, the author gives us an original concept with characters not explored often enough in YA/middle school fiction. There is grand worldbuilding with equally nuanced storylines, mysteries and hints, with enough intrigue to keep a reader interested. But the pacing is a bit off so it wasn't a clean read.
Story Two boys in very different life situations have a chance encounter in a very dystopian Earth. Ravaged and barely livable, survivors use pearls to power the machinery that protects domed cities and ships. The pearls occasionally fall out of the sky and finding them is a very lucrative business. When Jesse and Cassius meet as adversaries, they begin a path of discovery that will uncover the secret of the pearls - and the place they both will play once they learn that neither is what they believed.
I enjoyed the individual and distinct character of both boys. They are intelligent but also given to the foibles of that young age. One hotheaded the other methodical, each approach a problem from different angles. It was fascinating to see what would happen as the pressure mounted and each was forced to confront the pearl situation and also the realization that they have a common past. Although they are on very different sides - scavenger vs. military order - they are going to find that they will have to work together despite the instant dislike.
This is a well written novel with a Cain and Abel story at the heart. Although its description sounds more like a steampunk or Ender's Game type of book, it really ends up being a YA dystopian. And therein was the problem for me since I didn't necessarily believe the level of technology in that type of circumstance. I did like the bit of magic thrown in with all the science fiction and dystopian elements, however.
The worldbuilding is strong, there is a lot of action, good (though predictable twists), and is an undemanding and enjoyable read. I think teen/tween boys will especially enjoy this since it eschews a lot of the romance found in this genre and instead concentrates on the two boys and their antagonistic relationship.
Although the ending and cliffhanger were expected (and the riddle of the pearls was fairly obvious), they weren't anticlimactic. Because of the odd pacing, some parts were too quick and others far too long and drawn out (and too many info dumps). In all, I have no hesitation recommending this book but found it didn't intrigue me enough to want to read the next novel in the story.
I listened to the audible version and the narrator did a decent job.
