I'm clearly in the minority here, but I found this book actually kind of tawdry. I read a lot of Regency romances, but definitely the ones on the racy end of the scale, so I'm no prude, but I guess since themes like 50 Shades of Grey leave me cold, I was put off by the bondage-esque nature of this book. I definitely enjoyed the non-boudoir scenes in this book, although they weren't very realistic, but it was perhaps the first sexual encounter the heroine and hero had, wherein nobody even thought to use a condom or other form of birth and STD-prevention, where I stopped taking this story seriously. Since the rest of the book is deliberately modern, the carefree sexual wantonness just didn't ring true. Maybe that's a quibble, but for me, it was a big one, and made me care less about the whole story. The characters are one-dimensional, and the sex isn't all that sexy. I should confess that I was especially disappointed b/c I read the book in the first place b/c it was blurbed by the wonderful Eloisa James, whose writing I love -- just goes to show you should really never judge a book by its cover...blurbs!Tags : The Chocolate Thief [Laura Florand] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers.

Paris Breathtakingly beautiful, the City of Light seduces the senses, its cobbled streets thrumming with possibility. If you're in search of a delightful contemporary romance, then I suggest you try reading The Chocolate Thief. Thanks to Chachic's glowing review and constant endorsement of this series, I finally gave it a try -- and I loved what I found! The book is filled to the brim with fun, sass and romance. As if that wasn't enough, the heroine and hero are pretty awesome and it's set in Paris, one of the cities I want most to visit in the world! And the clincher? It revolves around chocolate.
Cade and Sylvain are pretty great, which was key in getting me interested in their story. Cade is confident, tenacious and also a little self-absorbed. The way she thinks, the passion she has for creating chocolate, her loyalty to her family - each of these qualities made it easy to love her. And Sylvain had awkward beginnings, but made something of himself as a master of chocolate, who was handsome, intelligent and cautious with his feelings. He was a bit arrogant and standoffish initially, but eventually, readers will see his heart beneath all of that bluster and fall for him too.
As individuals, they're already good characters; in a romantic entanglement, they're even more fun to read about! There's a lot of banter, mostly because there is quite a bit of misinterpretation and miscommunication between these two. There was a lot of tension too, which resulted in a steamy kiss or two (or possibly more...). I thought their romance was light an fun! It wasn't precisely my favorite relationship ever, but it sure made me smile a lot.
And can we talk about two more elements of this book that I adored -- the chocolate and Paris? The chocolate is a given, as I'm obsessed with sweets. I love the way it was described, flavors and scents and processes. I would love to take a workshop like some tourists do in this book, just to learn how chocolatiers make their amazing desserts. And to have the chocolate set against the backdrop of Paris? That's just delightful.
The Chocolate Thief was the perfect read for me when I needed something light and easy. With charming characters, an excellent setting, a sweet romance and a dash of chocolate, it's no wonder I ended up enjoying this. Laura Florand is certainly an authoryou should check out, particularly if you like any of the elements mentioned in this review. Her book will definitely not disappoint!
I admit - I came to this book for the chocolate. Chocolate is one of my great loves in life, so how could I resist a book in which chocolate is a main character itself?
The descriptions of chocolate in this book are so rich and satisfying, and I'd venture to say the true love affair in this book is the one with chocolate itself (and Paris, of course) moreso than what develops between Cade and Sylvain. I'm actually amazed I made it 1/3 of the way through the book before finally caving and heading to the store to pick up a few bags of Ghirardelli squares to indulge in whilst reading. You can tell the author is passionate about chocolate, how to make it, and its many varieties and that really set this book apart.
The first half of this book was absolutely wonderful. The chocolate comes alive and jumps off the pages. Cade and Sylvain have palpable tension between them that ignites when they finally get together. The overall atmosphere is sensual, tense and irresistible. We also get a glimpse into the minds of both characters, surprised to find quite a bit of depth to both of them as their vulnerabilities and worries are exposed. But all of these things are sorely lacking in the last half, which gets bogged down by each character silently wondering to themselves what the other is thinking instead of just having conversations. I never truly invested in the romance between Cade and Sylvain, so the wrap up at the end wasn't as satisfying as it should have been.
Overall, I still really enjoyed this book. It's fun, smart, sexy and unique and worth reading for Sylvain Marquis and his chocolate alone. A must for chocolate lovers.
